Missing Silver & Black Tabby

Our silver and black tabby Rodney has been missing for around 12 hours. This is odd because he is fed several times a day and has missed 5 meals. We are concerned because of the time being around Halloween. His collar was found on Bromfield street earlier today, and there has been no sign of him. Here is a picture, although it is not in colour. We posted a comment, but we cannot put a picture up, and we were wondering if you would put a post up. We are very concerned

Please forward any information to:uccatwatch@me.com

Another Bobcat Spotting

October 21, 2009

This information was emailed to me for posting – Bob G

I live on the 4400 block of Robbins and over the past three to four months as I walk or run the neighborhoods I’ve noticed the signs up around the area regarding the cats.  We too have cats, 2 that are always indoors and a neighborhood cat that roams between us and a few others close by.  Two months ago while eating in our backyard both my husband and I spotted a Bobcat on our back hillside…YES a BOBCAT.  It looked to be possible 45-55lbs. we saw it only once but that was enough.  In addition we’ve been experiencing an increased number of “family’s” roaming thru our backyard in the evening (mostly Skunks).  Now we have a pool and law states that we have a 6 foot fence surrounding the yard, which we do!  How all of these little critters are finding their way over this huge fence boggles the mind.

The icing on the cake and what prompted me to send this to you to get out to our neighbors is that this past Monday evening around 10:30pm I spotted not one but “three” sets of eyes peering thru my back sliding door into my family room.  Needless to say my cats were freaked!!  I turned on the back lights expecting to find skunks only to find a momma Raccoon and three of her babies tearing up my potted plants, I’m guessing they were looking for food.  To my added surprise two more little Raccoon’s were playing in my pool drinking….now that’s FIVE of them in my yard, not scared by the lights or the noises i was making, they just looked at me and “waved”…LOL  They came and went twice pillaging my potted tomatoes and peppers then down the side of my house they wandered.

Coyote Attack

October 17, 2009

Information below forwarded by Pia.
Thanks Pia!

Could you please let the list people know that my friend was walking
her small dogs at 11pm last night at the park on Cather when a pack of
3 coyotes tried to attack her dogs and her. She gathered up her dogs,
the coyotes kept coming, luckily, her husband and son came out to
chase the coyotes away, throwing rocks. Even then, the coyotes were
not scared of them and followed them almost to their home.

They were not hurt.

I left a message with county control. Just to let the neighbors know
that they really need to make sure they keep their small children and
dogs indoors and not let them out of their sight.

Thanks,
Theresa

Recent Posts and General News

September 28, 2009

Hello all. I have been considering options to be able to have all the posts to this blog in one section but I’m still working on how to do that and keep things formatted so that comments to be posted in threads. I thought I could just copy and paste but I’m finding out that there is more to it than that. If anyone has experience on how to set this up or is familiar with the ins and outs of WordPress please contact me.

I wanted to call attention to a couple of recent posts that you may not be aware of. One was from Kristen (see comments posted below) about her fiance coming across a Bobcat while on a recent run in the canyon.

Another post from Meg (posted in the “About UC Cat Watch” section) is on her recent conversation with someone at Fish and Game. Thanks to Meg for taking the time to keep calling until she was finally able to reach someone and then taking the time to report Fish and Games thoughts on all the recent missing cat activity.

Lastly, while I believe is the free exchange of ideas and information, in some few cases I have limited posts that in my opinion where not informational but rather someones strong opinion or someone just wanted to complain. So it goes.

Another Cat Threat

September 4, 2009

I received the following information from a neighbor on Huggins asking that I post it on the blog. I extend my sympathy to Kim and family for their tragic loss.
Bob G.

From Kim E.

The UC community has yet another threat to the cat population. I live on Huggins Street and many of you probably will remember my cat Grey Guy (GG). GG (tabby cat) was killed by a dog named Marley on Wednesday. My cat was sleeping in my yard which is surrounded by a fence and shrubs. It is impossible to see beyond this barrier. The dog evidently smelled the presence of a cat. The dog broke thru the vegetation to bite GG in the neck & shake him to death. GG was 20 years old with hearing problems so he did not hear or sense the presence of the dog. My kids witnessed the attack. The dog has been spotted loose in the neighborhood since the attack occurred. I’ve lodged complaints with animal control. The dog is new to the neighborhood. His family moved in this week so he is not responsible for the other cat deaths in the area. I know there are many outdoor cats on Huggins. Please keep them safe…

New page added with links to photo galleries

August 25, 2009

I just added a new page with a link to the cats and dogs at the three San Diego Animal Shelters. If you have a missing pet this is a good place to check. I also added a link to an organization called PetFinders, the are a group that helps with adoptions and they too have a photo gallery. Craigslist also has a lost and found pet section however I would caution you that any of the lost pet recovery services on Craiglist should be checked out before signing up. I have heard that there are a few scams running through Craigslist.

Congratulations to Mary who’s lost cat was found in Vista after being gone for 6 weeks!

A Few Updates

August 23, 2009

I just read an interesting comment (posted below in the comments section) from Jeff relaying a recent near encounter with what sounds to be a bobcat. A few of the recent comments have lead me to believe that there is something more than just random coyote attacks going on in our neighborhood. Please read Jeff’s comments and see what you think.

In other news, Diane and Austin S. have created a flyer (see below) that they have volunteered to print and hand out in the neighborhood to help warn of all the recent cat attacks and missing cats. I would like to personally thank Diane and Austin for so generiously stepping forward to help get the word out.

I was also informed from Pia that there will be an article in the next UC news (is it still called the UC Light?). Much thanks to Pai for her efforts and to everyone who has contributed and help spread the word about this blog and the missing cats.

Lastly I have moved the map Jeff created to it’s own page (see the page list >). Jeff is continuing to update this map so please make sure to either add a comment or email any additions to uccatwatch@me.com.

Latest update from SDPD

August 17, 2009

This afternoon I had a conversation with officer Nicholas of the northern division (UC area) who is covering for office Schnick who’s on vacation. I updated him on all the information that had been posted so far and called his attention to the map showing the location of the missing pets (thanks Jeff). He suggested that we contact animal control to make sure they were fully informed which I will do tomorrow. He also suggested that if anyone finds a dead animal, cat or otherwise that looks like it had been attacked to please alert the animal control about the investigation on missing cats as their evaluation of the incident may help determine the exact circumstance that the animal died. Also I was thinking that if anyone had any contact information for local wildlife groups that might be able to offer their thoughts on the local coyote population it might be worthwhile. Lastly I believe it would be a good idea to keep an eye out for any coyotes or other predators and if you see one let us know  so we can add that information to the mix.

I want to express my gratitude to the SDPD for taking a active concern in this and being open and willing to provide information.

My heart goes out to all those that have lost their beloved pets. My house just isn’t the same without our Stanley. We miss him.
